New Zealand has strict emissions and frontal impact regulations essentially limiting most Japanese passenger vehicles to 2004/2005 year models and newer. Vehicles require a 3 digit code model number to be eligible.
Vehicles are required by the Ministry of Primary Industries (MPI) to undergo a quarantine inspection prior to importation. This service is provided in Japanand the UK prior to export by JEVIC. Please see more information here.
The New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) requires a structural inspection prior to registration in New Zealand. This inspection is done in Japan by JEVIC at the time of the MPI inspection. More information can be found here. Vehicles with tampered odometers and flood damage are prohibited. Accident damaged vehicles may be required to undergo extensive repairs to be able to be registered for road use.
